Winners announced at the Honda Dreams reception in
MotorPark Galway on Thursday 8
th of September

Ability West, an organisation that provides high quality services and support to children and adults with Intellectual disability across Galway City and County, were announced as the overall winner of the inaugural Honda - Powering Local Dreams Community Spirit Competition at the Awards Ceremony in Motorpark Galway on Thursday night (8th of September). John Saunders, Sales and Marketing Director, Universal Honda Ireland and Colin Barry, Managing Director, Motorpark Group presented Breda Crehan-Roche, and her colleagues at Ability West with a cheque for €5,000, which they will use to purchase amphibious all-terrain beach wheelchairs.

First runner up was Ardrahan Camogie Club and 2nd runner up was Moyne Villa FC, who both received cheques from Honda Ireland of €1,000 and €500 respectively. The Honda - Powering Local Dreams initiative is designed to support the local community by telling their stories and granting a €5,000 cash prize to the winning club, group or organisation. It was launched first in Galway in early July, and all groups, clubs and organisations that celebrate, include, value, nurture, share and enhance their community were invited to enter. The 3 finalists, Ability West, Moyne Villa FC and Ardrahan Camogie Club, were selected from a broad spectrum of entries representing Galway community life. Each finalist then made a short video on what they do in the community and why they deserved to win Honda Dreams. This video was then shared on Honda’s social media and ultimately the public decided by voting online for their favourite video, who would be the overall winner of Honda Powering Local Dreams Galway 2016.

The Honda Dreams Awards night was mc’ed by Galway native and presenter of RTE Today, Maura Derrane. Each of the finalists videos were shown on stage and Maura spoke to Breda Crehan - Roche, Ability West; Liam Hanrahan, Moyne Villa FC and Aisling Brennan, Ardrahan Camogie Club who all eloquently told the worthy stories of their organisations / clubs. A big surprise on the evening was the announcement that in addition to the top prize of €5,000, Honda would sponsor both a 2nd prize of €1,000 and a 3rd prize of €500, meaning all three finalists went home with much needed funds towards their future projects.

John Saunders, Sales and Marketing Director, Universal Honda Ireland,

The Honda Brand has spent over 30 years in the Irish market being sold by local family owned and run dealerships. operating in the heart of their towns and cities. The people of these communities have been our customers through all that time and we wanted to give something back. “Powering Local Dreams” is about finding a deserving cause or group in a community and helping them directly. We had some fantastic applications from across the community, from Arts projects, social initiatives, sports clubs and community groups. The judging was extremely difficult, but the ultimate winner was chosen by the community, and we are delighted to be able to help “Ability West” purchase two all-terrain wheelchairs which will allow the beautiful beaches of Galway be accessible to all. We very much look forward to seeing all our finalists continuing the fantastic work they do for their teams, towns, villages and county.
